Dinosaur birthday party ideas
Best for ages 3–7
Dinosaurs are the easiest theme to do well outdoors and the hardest to do well in a small lounge room, because the whole thing is built around digging, stomping and roaring.
It's also the theme with the widest age range in one room — a three-year-old wants a big friendly plastic dinosaur, and a six-year-old will correct your pronunciation of Parasaurolophus. Plan for both.
Dinosaur party games
Five, with the ages they suit and roughly how long each one runs. Together they fill about 65 minutes, which is the active half of a two-hour party — the rest is arrivals, food, cake and everyone finding their shoes.
Fossil dig
Ages 3–7 · about 20 minBuried skeletons or painted 'bones' in sand, one brush per child, and a rule that each child stops at three finds. Without the limit, two children excavate the entire pit in four minutes.
Dinosaur egg hunt
Ages 3–6 · about 15 minPlastic eggs hidden at knee height and below. Colour-code by child so the older ones can't clean out the yard before the little ones have started.
Stomp the volcano
Ages 4–7 · about 10 minBubble wrap taped to the ground; children stomp it flat on the count of three. Absurdly effective at burning off the sugar between cake and pick-up.
Sleeping dinosaurs
Ages 3–6 · about 10 minThe quiet game every party needs. Everyone lies still; the last one moving wins. Run it directly after the dig pit, when they're wound up and you need eight minutes to put the candles in.
Dinosaur or not?
Ages 5–8 · about 10 minCall out an animal; children roar if it's a dinosaur and freeze if it isn't. Slip in a pterosaur and a mammoth for the six-year-old who has been waiting all afternoon to tell you they're not dinosaurs.
Dinosaur decorations
- A dig pit: a shell pool or a plastic tub of play sand with buried toy skeletons. This is the party, not a decoration
- Green and brown streamers twisted into 'jungle' over a doorway
- Cardboard palm trees from flattened boxes and green paint — an afternoon with the birthday child, and it counts as part of the celebration
- Footprints in chalk from the front gate to the back yard
- Plastic dinosaurs scattered on the table instead of a centrepiece; they go home in the party bags

'Fossil' biscuits
Plain biscuit dough pressed with a toy dinosaur's foot before baking
Veggie 'swamp' platter

In August you'll pay for it; in a summer party it's the cheapest thing on the table and disappears fastest

Made two days ahead, which is two fewer things on the morning
The cake
Green icing dragged with a fork for 'scales', a few plastic dinosaurs on top, crushed chocolate biscuit as dirt around the base. It takes fifteen minutes and reads as a dinosaur cake from across the room, which is the only distance anyone sees it from.
What goes in the party bags
- A plastic dinosaur from the table
- A packet of seeds — the 'prehistoric plant' bit lands surprisingly well
- A fossil biscuit in a paper bag
- A temporary tattoo
The thing that goes wrong
The sand. Put the dig pit on grass or a tarp, not on decking or a driveway, and have a hose or a bucket by the back door. Every child will come in with sand to their elbows about ten minutes before the cake.
What it costs
One of the cheapest themes to do well: about $180–$320 at home for 20 children, because the two centrepieces are a bag of play sand ($8–$12 at Bunnings) and cardboard. Spend the saving on a second adult to run the dig pit.
