Unicorn birthday party ideas
Best for ages 3–8
Unicorn is the most-requested theme for girls turning four to seven, and it is the one most likely to be overspent on, because the shops have an entire aisle of it. Almost none of that aisle is necessary.
The theme is carried by three things: pastel colours, something iridescent that catches the light, and one horn. Everything else is decoration you are paying a licensing fee for.
Unicorn party games
Five, with the ages they suit and roughly how long each one runs. Together they fill about 65 minutes, which is the active half of a two-hour party — the rest is arrivals, food, cake and everyone finding their shoes.
Pin the horn on the unicorn
Ages 3–6 · about 10 minButcher's paper unicorn on the wall, a horn per child with their name on it, a scarf as the blindfold. For under-fives, skip the spin — being spun is the part that makes small children cry.
Unicorn horn making
Ages 4–8 · about 20 minGold card cones, elastic, glue, and a bowl of sequins. Runs first, while guests are still arriving in ones and twos, and doubles as the party bag.
Rainbow treasure hunt
Ages 4–8 · about 15 minHide six objects, one per rainbow colour. Children work in pairs and can only collect their assigned colour, which stops the fastest child collecting everything.
Freeze dance
Ages 3–8 · about 10 minThe reliable filler. Nobody is 'out' — children who move do a silly pose instead. An elimination game leaves your loudest guest with nothing to do for eight minutes.
Cloud walk
Ages 3–6 · about 10 minPaper plate 'clouds' on the floor as stepping stones. Remove one each round. Cooperative, so the last few children are helping each other balance rather than competing.
Unicorn decorations
- Balloon garland in pastel pink, lilac, mint and white — a $15 strip kit plus a pump does what a $90 professional garland does
- One iridescent foil curtain behind the cake table; this is what every photo will have in the background
- Cardboard unicorn horns as both decoration and craft — cut from gold card, elastic through two punched holes
- Fairy lights in jars, if the party runs past 5pm in winter
- Skip: themed tablecloths, themed cups, themed plates. Plain pastel costs a third as much and nobody looks at a cup

Non-negotiable. Cut into triangles, made an hour ahead, not the night before
Rainbow fruit skewers
Strawberry, mandarin, pineapple, green grape, blueberry, purple grape. Does the theme's whole job and gets eaten
Pastel popcorn
Plain popcorn, a spray of white chocolate, a drop of gel colour. Makes an enormous bowl for about $4
Marshmallow 'unicorn horns'
Marshmallow on a pretzel stick, dipped, with sprinkles. Ten minutes of work
Something beige and hot
Sausage rolls or party pies. Children at a pastel party still want a sausage roll
The cake
A single-layer round, white icing, and a shop-bought fondant horn and ears pressed in — piping a mane is where home unicorn cakes go wrong. If you'd rather not bake, a plain mud cake from the supermarket with a horn on it photographs better than a bad homemade one.

- One decent thing: a hair clip or a small figurine
- Two lollies, not eleven
The thing that goes wrong
Glitter. It gets into the food, and it gets onto every parent who comes to collect. Sequins and iridescent card do the same job and stay where you put them.
What it costs
A unicorn party at home for 20 children runs about $220–$400: cake $40–$80, food $70–$120, balloons and card $40–$60, party bags $60–$100. The jump to $700+ is almost always a venue or an entertainer, not the theme.
