Footy birthday party ideas
Best for ages 5–11
For older children — seven and up — a footy party solves the problem that a themed party stops working around age eight. Nobody thinks a game of footy is babyish.
It's also the cheapest party for a large group, because the venue is the local oval and it's free. The structure that makes it work is a skills circuit first and a short game last, not a long game that the least confident child spends thirty minutes not touching the ball in.
Footy party games
Five, with the ages they suit and roughly how long each one runs. Together they fill about 75 minutes, which is the active half of a two-hour party — the rest is arrivals, food, cake and everyone finding their shoes.
Skills circuit
Ages 5–11 · about 25 minFour stations: kicking for goal, handball at a target, bouncing through cones, marking. Pairs rotate every five minutes. Everyone touches the ball constantly, which a game does not guarantee.
Longest kick
Ages 7–11 · about 10 minThree kicks each, marked with a cone. Run it as a personal-best rather than a winner, and the child who kicks it eight metres still gets a cone with their name on it.
Handball tunnel-ball relay
Ages 6–11 · about 10 minTwo teams, handball down the line and back. Fast, loud, and it mixes the confident and less confident players by design.
Short-sided game
Ages 7–11 · about 20 minTwenty minutes, no longer, with an adult umpiring and swapping the teams at half time so the result stops mattering. Put it last, so it can run over or get cut without breaking the plan.
Goal-kicking shootout
Ages 5–11 · about 10 minEveryone lines up, one kick each, step back a metre each round. The natural finale — it ends on its own and everyone is watching.
Footy decorations
- Team colours, and only team colours. Streamers, balloons, plates — pick two colours and stop
- Coloured bibs or sashes so the teams are obvious from the sideline
- Witches hats to mark the circuit; borrow them from a local club or use jumpers
- A hand-drawn 'scoreboard' on butcher's paper with everyone's name on it
- A club-style banner the children run through — two poles and taped-together crepe paper. It takes ten minutes and it's the photo

The cake
A rectangular cake iced as a footy ground: green icing, white piped lines, and the goalposts made from paper straws. Easier than it sounds and much easier than a spherical ball cake, which requires a bowl tin and structural confidence.
What goes in the party bags
- A cheap footy — this is the one thing worth the money
- A wristband in the team colours
- The cone or medal from the longest kick
- A muesli bar, because they'll be starving
The thing that goes wrong
Sun and heat. Book the oval for the morning or after 4pm, not midday, bring more water than you think, and have a shaded spot for the food. Also check whether the ground is booked — most councils let you reserve a corner for free, and finding a cricket match on it is a bad ten minutes.
What it costs
$150–$300 for 20 children, and the biggest number in it is the food. The venue is free, the entertainment is a ball, and the only real spend is party pies, drinks and a footy each for the bags — cut that last one and it's under $150.
